I make sure im in the right gear, and far enough behined to get a runup.

You shouldn't be applying only throttle and selecting a gear as you overtake, should all already be done well in advance, and be near to rolling off the throttle as you pass, and unless they are in a very fast car, shouldn't be able to overtake.

Oh, but if your cars really not quick enough,

drop back a little

set beam to high.

Sit smugly, maybe even showing a polite middle finger
