outstanding debt is one thing to consider, but there al also outstanding customers that may have never been paid out, or have bad history etc that you may end up contending with too

A good company, yes, because you benefit from their positive branding. But obviously, this is illegal. A bad company, why?

Its got its good and bad points. Bad has all been covered, but good MIGHT be that the same is already established between car enthusiasts. Ok, so the name is tarnished, but having your name already 'known' could be seen as a minor benefit.

That would be written off by the liquidators in a lot of cases.
