My current wheels are 7J ET 45, I'm wondering if I got some 6.5J wheels if I took 0.5 inches off the offset would the wheel sit the same distance away from the suspension strut as it does at current?

You would need to add 0.25 inches to the offset, as the wheel is losing 0.5 inches, but the offset is measured from the centreline, so only half of this difference.

So, in effect you need wheels that are 6.5J with an offset of 57mm ish, although if you kept the offset of 45, then both the outer edge would be further from the arch and the inner edge would be further from the strut.

Hope that essay helped!

The reason I ask is because I want to paint my arch trims black but the tyres are too close at the moment (hence the cheap grey trim).

IIRC its about half a fingers width away from the spring because they are coilovers. Tyres are 195/45 on 16 inch alloys.

Well if you go for ET49, as long as the wheel is more than 4mm from the strut at the moment you will be fine.

If there isn't enough room, just go for 16 x 6.5J and ET 49 and you will have loads of room.

I will measure it when I finally pull my finger out and correct my camber . Changing the camber will affect how far away the strut is away from the wheel won't it?

Yes, definitely.

Should be fine at the moment though, but may be best to go to 6.5J wheels unless you want to modify the arches.
