There's a cs versions that I presume are an in betweeny? Only available after a certain year aswell I think.

Yeah, the CS is an in between. Get some of the looks, the alloys and suede interior, but isn't completely stripped. Apparently, with the CSL, you had to sign a desclaimer that you wouldn't drive it in the damp and rain, because of the semi-slick tyres. They are as semi-slick as road legal tyres get.

I supposed I am biased because dad has one, but, the E46 M3 is an extremely good car. The engine, got voted the 'Best Engine of the Year' from 2001 or something. It is the same engine found in late Z3 M's and now found in Z4 M's.

They facelifted the M3 in approximately 2003, gaining LED rear lights, which is about it. The front didn't change unlike on standard E46 coupes.

The SMGII gearbox (flappy paddle attached to a manual box) is desirable with regard to resale value, but the manual is much more fun. Dad has one with SMGII but did a track day in a manual, and loved it more.

There is something about the M3 exhaust note. It is so metallic and raspy, yet good. Dad says the brakes aren't really that good for the car, and they'd be one thing he'd upgrade if he really felt the need.

The only downside, is they are quite high maintenance, and any bills can be expensive. Both the rear springs in dads snapped (the snapped off bits were lying on the drive). This was after about 17k miles or something. BMW said this was normal due to UK roads. The alternator also went in dads not long ago. Apparently this isn't strange either.

CSL has a different intake aswell. Its carbon and sounds the nuts.

Its on my list of cars to own!

After hearing them at the ring it was close to giving me goose bumps!

nice cars but a lot of people that own them are cocks and cant drive...would probably have a differnt car for the same money if i had the choice

I have heard a lot of horror stories about he CSL, due to it being light and traction control set ups and what not.

I think the CS would be the best comprimise. Lightweight, still got all the refinements of the standard car, very rare (probably rarer than CSL's) and might be more fun than standard.

Even with all the weight shed the CSL is not quicker than an e36 Evo!

They looks the nuts and with the air intake they sound the nuts but from a personal view I dont think any performance car should run a semi auto box so I would plunge for the CS personally.

The figures in Evo magazine are 5.1 to 60 and 12.3 to 100. Those figures above seem hopeful to me. The CSL is quicker than the E36 Evo although not by a lot using these methods - 5.3 + 12 versus 5.4 and 12.8 However the CSL weighs 1385kgs with 255hp per tonne, the E36 1515kg's and only 215hp per tonne so I would think the CSL will be a fair bit quicker in real life conditions.

An M3 with SMGII gearbox is pretty slow off the mark as well. I'd have a manual I think.
