Where can I start?

I've got a standard engine, and it's quick enough to easily deal with a lot of modern hatches (I won't name any, but you know what I'm getting at)

The brakes are SHIT, there's no two ways about that, they're absolutely awful, but you'll be used to that, having Novas You can sort it with a pedal box which costs about £130, and some pipework, so it's not a big deal. They're not bad enough to be scary, they're just no-where near as good as a modern car.

Handling is awesome, I've driven quite a few cars and this is better than all of them, evo magazine voted it 3rd of 4th in the top 15 best handling FWD cars ever, I think it was above the Clio sports.

Engines, you've got loads of choice, the standard 1.8 8v is good, 112bhp from the factory (mine has 108bhp 24 years later), but if that's not enough, then you can use a 2 litre block from an Audi 80, which will give you about 125bhp and a bucket load more torque, all for about £50.

If you want more power, the 1.8 16v from a mk2 goes straight in, or the 2.0 16v from a Corrado, Passat or Audi 80, although you need a special exhaust manifold which costs about £180 new.

The 2.0 16v from the mk3 will go in too, it's got electronic injection though, so it's a little bit harder than the mechanical injection ones from the older cars (mechanical injection is just as good as the electronic stuff, don't worry about that)

I paid £50 for a complete 1.8 16v engine, which is cheap, but you can get pretty much any of the 16v ones for under £300, apart from the mk3 one, which will be a little more.

If that's not enough, you can use the 1.8 20v Turbo from a Golf/A3/Leon/Ibiza/Passat/A4/Octavia, but it'll cost quite a lot of money to do as the engines are still pricey and you need a few special parts (mounts are available off the shelf, but they're not cheap)

Or... if you really want, you can get the VR6 from a Golf or Corrado, or even the 3.2 VR6 from a Golf R32 if you like.

Genuine body panels are hard to get, but decent pattern parts aren't, and everything mechanical is easy to get hold of from GSF etc.

Tuning bits are available from everywhere, there's nothing you can't get, whatever you want, you can have.

Personally, I wouldn't go for a 1.8t, I think the 16v is the best option, 2 litre bottom end, 1.8 head, carbs and you've got just shy of 200bhp, which will be more than enough, then get some coilovers and a pedal box and that's all you need

Vauxhall brakes fit too BTW, and are cheaper than VW ones, V6 calipers and 280mm Golf G60 discs is a common upgrade now, and costs about half that of using G60 calipers too.

Mine's been perfectly reliable, starts every time and hasn't broken down.

Just make sure the car is solid if you do get one, avoid anything with rust, even if it means buying a solid car with a crap engine, it's the bodywork which is the important part, everything else can be sorted very easily.

Hope there's enough info in my essay

I'm sure Paul H and Graeme will agree with what I've said too, and fill in anything I've missed

as said avoid rust, there are enough out there to get one with out it, minor bits of rust are ok but things like inner wings, bulkhead, filler cap not as bad but still not good.

and like robin says breaks are truley wank and thats an understatment.

personally i think the 1.8 8v is ok but its not fast fast, a nice g60 lump would fit nicley!
