watched my mate eat one without a drink a few years back after a nite on the beers, the owners just watched in disbelief as he kept saying no to the offers of water. i remember him complaining of a bad stomach the next day, this boy could eat anything hot with no fuss

Only way to eat a phal is to take a big forkful and wipe it around the inside of your mouth. After the initial pain you'll go numb and you wont feel the spices til, oooh, about 24 hours later.

Most places usually do them but they don't put them on the menu so you have to ask.

What enjoyment could you possibly get out of eating something so hot it makes you ill?

I actually wish I'd gotten something else as it wasn't enjoyable.

I think when your body reacts in such a fashion it's natures way of saying 'don't eat me i'm bad for you'
