bit quicker than a Vts and 106 gti. will keep up with a ibiza cupra or be slightly quicker and is on par with a civic type R

easily the best car out there for a good handling quickish hatchback.

had a play with a megane 225 r26 the other day, pulled aay from that, had a chat with the owner of the 225 he says its right for that to happen.

for what you pay its an ace car, on the bends out the box the cup is awesome, add some 15" wheels and some eibachs and your laughing, if you have money to burn h&r coilovers are the next step, after that bilstein coilovers.

they arnt seriously fast, if you want a fast car get a turbo of somesort and spend a bit on a chip, i have a golf 1.8t aswell, for speed the golf is better after 80, i.e. motorways etc. the clio you need to rev to get it going fast, but take it for a spin down some country lans and its ace, will keep up with alot of faster cars. the clio is tunable, throttle bodies and some mild cams will see 210+bhp, but depends how much you want to spend!

i looked at the full fat clio, the 182 and the trophy, and valu efor money the 172 cup was the better option, the 182 just has a different exhaust manifold to gain the power. the trophy is ace but alot of money for some seats and suspension that you wont benifit on unless your a track day whore

i think the 172cup will be perfect then, my mate has one and and its a great car. cant comment on a xe corsa as i never been in one but out the box the cup has fantastic handling and is about as fast as a ctr.

for what it is its very good on fuel, expect around 35+ mpg on a gentle drive and when driven hard its better on fuel than a ctr aswell.

generally solid car but i think the gearboxes can be a problem and the exhausts seem to just drop off! also my friends seems to run very slightly lumpy on idle which i am told is quite normal, as for parts i would imagine they will be more than your average clio but still pretty reasonable.

only downside i found about it is that the car just doesnt appear to be very sporty. from the outside it is a nice car but to those who dont know what it is its just a 'nice clio' and the interior has nothing sporty about it at all, and i found the seating position to high.

though some people will also find my last point a positive as its very discreet on the roads and doesnt attract chavs when parked up, so no need to look out your window every 5 mins

My mate has one, the only problems have been the exhaust falling off, a common fault on all 172's and its actually cheaper to replace with a stainless exhaust than with a replacement Renault! Also the plastic trim surrounding the gear leaver broke. Other interior trim is prone to breaking too.

Good cars though and very nippy.

problems are as mentioned really, gearboxes aint that good, but only really give problems if you hammer them, mines fine for now, also exhaust do fall off, mine about to, so going to get a stelth system from yozzasport soon as they decide to release it. gear leaver trim comming away is common, easy to fix, all the other problems are easy to sort, i get 30+mpg on a tank, does drop to 25when killing it but soon makes up for it.

as for not looking sporty, from the front they look loads better than a standard clio, and the lack of a big shiney exhaust poking out the back on the 172 is a blessing IMO! the inetrior isnt great but then if you want leather go for a full fat version. the seats are very comfy, drove to fance in mine and didnt get a numb bum which was a suprise as the 20v golf gti makes me sore on a 2hour trip.

parts, they aint the cheapest, a front splitter is 120+vat and they are very low..... a 172cup badge is £25+vat and they fall off......

mines not given me a major problem, if you do track days tho expect to be replacing wheel bearings in them.
