can you tax your car with just the recipt part of the logbook or do you need the whole thing

If its the V5, im sure you can, yep

edit: What it says behind the V5 slip -

- The New Keeper (Buyer) can use this Section in (something beginning with P, hole-punched through the word) of the full registration Certificate to obtain a vehicle excise licence at any licence issuing Post Office ir DVLA Local Office.

Further information is avaliable on the internet at
www.direct.gov.uk/motoring

Obviously, you'd need the relevant documents, insurance, MOT (unless cars under 3 yrs old, e.t.c... )
