Can get to London cheap enough (£1 each way, megabus ), but can only find £6.90 each way on a train and for two of us thats like £28 both ways, thought watford wasn't that far from London

Watford is about 20 mins away. If you intend on not buying a train ticket though, they have a barrier to stop you. It stopped me and i paid £80 last time i went

Watford takes a overland train not the underground afaik, so it costs more. Its only expensive because you're comparing it to a crappy megabus

You don't get 3 day rail cards, only 1 day ones.
