Ouzo is a liqueur and generally should be served on it's own. However you can serve it on ice (crushed is a nice idea). Also with soda water, lemonade or a bit of water as a mixer. Also takes great with coffee (like a liqueur coffee). Or like pernod serve it with blackcurrant cordial (ie: one part ouzo and one part cordial) that tastes quite nice but depends on what you're into. One lady came into the pub a few weeks ago and was drinking Pernod and orange juice She said it tasted nice but it smelt like it must be an acquired taste

i always thought drinking water with ouzo/raki and the likes (not bourbons!) enhances the "off your face" effect and was always told/lead to believe that if you've been having a heavy night on the stuff, then you shouldn't drink water in the morning as it does the complete opposite to sobering up

And i take there in the same family because they all use distilled alcohol, with malt/grain for whiskies, ouzo having yeast and raki (turkish) using figs?

I meant whiskies as in single malts as these are the ones that are drunk with water or singularly. Bourbons are generally not drunk with water (I guess except ice and/or mixers) as they are distilled in a different way. The reason water is added to single malts (depends on the persons taste as they're drunk on their own as well as used with mixers etc) is because the water releases the aromas and flavours of the whisky. And water is actually commonly used when whisky tasting

As for being told to not drink water after a night out that's absolutely ridiculous! Alcohol is dehydrating and therefore you will need water to rehydrate- which is why it's THE only real hangover cure regardless of the various hocus pocus potions people concoct.

I meant pernod, sambucca, ouzo (and yes raki etc) being in the same family as being aniseed based. But also the water brings out the flavour and intensity (like with the whisky).

Phew...! Anyone for a drink?!

Yeah it's an aquired taste apparently. Try not to drink the stuff tbh. Pernod and Ricard is ok (at a push) with the blackcurrent cordial I mentioned... And sambucca as a shot (flaming with a coffee bean in ) but that's about it. Nath how much water did you put in? Supposed to be less or just equal to a measure, no more. Lemonade is also nice btw- think I mentioned that before though...

Ah well I probably put too much in then, was about 4/5 water, 1/5 Ouzo.

I'll try lemonade next.

i was actually talking about raki/ouzo/and the likes, not alcohol in general. i know alcohol is a diuretic but i specifically told that drinking water with raki/ouzo (not whiskies or beer, or any other type of alcohol) doesn't sober you up. instead it does the complete opposite.

it doesn't seem to be the case though....

Ah right I assumed you were being generic with your comment, sorry Dom. Maybe the logic behind what you were told is due to adding water to the ouzo, raki, pernod, sambucca, tsipuro, ricard (delete as appropriate) you're in essence watering it down as you drink it. In other words you keep adding water and therefore won't get as drunk this way (in theory) or feel any effects from the alcohol and keep drinking more (but actually end up worse for wear the next day) If that makes sence?
