Anyone in the know about them?
Is the 1.8 Turbo conversion expensive? Is it any good, or too heavy really?
Is the 8v or the 16v the better engine? Reliable, take a good hammering? Tuneable? Vauxhall Tuning kinda prices or more expensive?
I know they are great cars handling wise, and big in the modified VW scene. Someone just mentioned something which fired off new ideas in my head.
Make a bad handling car handle ok. (corsa)
Or make a good handling car, handle even better... (golf)
16v is 130bhp isn't it? 8v is around 110-120?
Anyone gen me up?

they handle ok,
wouldnt say they would out handle a 205 of the same era but thats only IMO and based on the onse i have driven.
mk1's fetch alot more money than the mk2's
If your loking for a mint mk1 drop me a u2 cus my old mans mate restores them

i wouldnt say a mk2 golf is a great handling car
i find them very boring TBH, unless it has silly power (mk2 that is)

Mine is quite chuckable, takes a good hammering & is cheap a fuck to maintain.
Ive heard a 1.8T is £3-5k depending who does it

Me and my mates have been through 3 or 4 MKII's...
...a mate has just finished a 1.8T conversion, it's absolutely mental on the road, just can't get traction through first or 2nd but once in 3rd it really flies (would be much better with an LSD). It's stupid quick and pulls the whole way up, not yet met a Scooby that can do it even though it's only running 230bhp.
He did the work himself and it's pretty straight forward, mostly just bolts straight on with some aftermarket management, reckon it's set him back £3.5k all in. As far as weight goes, you can't notice any difference and it definately handles as well as my 8v, doesn't sit any lower on the standard springs either.
As for the standard engines, from experience there's sod all between them, my 8v was quicker to 100 than my mates 16v K-jet, but it caught up after that and kept going longer. In my opinion the 8v sounds better and feels torquier lower down. They also take a good hammering, I sold mine with 178k on the clock and it got abused everywhere but never used any oil or water or died on me.
Don't know about tuning 'cos I sold it before I got a chance and bought a Corrado, but you can drop the 2 Litre in straight out of a 'Rado or MKIII and change the inlet cam back to the 1.8 and get around 170bhp for a few hundred quid, not bad....

Oh, and the 8v engines are solid, mine's done 115k and makes 4bhp less than the book figure. It's the injection system which can cause problems (if it's k-jetronic) as dirty fuel blocks the injectors.
16v is a great engine.

instantly throws the 1.8T out the window though, and certainly favours the 8v motor...
Im talking track monkey car, so it'll be light, and needs to be reliable. I know the Mk1 is the lighter, but its also the more expensive, and rarer, so wouldn't want to ditch it

There fun little cars with a bit of character, but there not fast by any means, I just got owned on the bypass by an old guy in a mazda ffs 
Mines just a bit of cheap fun until i get some funds together for something better. I expect to keep it a year & get back what it owes me, maybe a bit more.

For a cheap, fun track day car, I wouldn't buy a mk2, or a mk1 for that matter.
Mine's great on the back roads, but it's slow as fuck really, would be awful on a track, unless it was a go kart one 
You'd want about 200bhp in a mk2 for it to work as a track car IMO.
205 would be a better option, even if they are french

Straightline isn't all that important tbh.
Its the cornering ability that interests me more.
Say in comparison to a 2.0 Corsa... 
Don't like 205's tbh, really just do nothing for me.

If cheap track car is what you're after you can't go wrong with a MKII, it's the torque they're lacking but the 2 litre conversion soon sorts that out for pennies really.
My MKII only cost me £500 quid and was pretty much spot on with a mint interior and never went wrong.
Standard handling isn't wonderful, cheap 2nd hand coilies make it pretty decent though.

Well, I've not driven a mk2 GTI, only a 1.3 C, but my (standard) mk1 would outhandle my old (1.6) Corsa, so make your own judgment about what it'd be like against a medium suspension specced 2 litre.

i have driven my boss`s mk2 gti alot and that handels very well and really does go, revs all the way in every gear, his has done about 105k and the engine runs mint
