Reduces the restriction on the escape of the exhaust gases so yes improves performance. You can replace the cat with a de-cat pipe, or hollow out the material inside the cat and weld it back up.

Well my car has no cat and it passed its MOT, its the emissions it needs to pass on, not the fact a cat is necessary.

I wouln't say there was much difference in fuel consumption when i had a de-cat. De-cats cost different prices from different places and it will depend on whether you do the work yourself or take it to a garage.

it involves chopping the cat out and replacing with a straight through pipe.

free's up a few more horseys by making the exhaust gases more freeflowing i think

More cold air give you more power. Making it easier for the air to get in increases performance as does allowing gases to exit easier.

i got a decat made acouple of months back and it was £50, petrol consumption is the same as when my car was totally standard and it is smoother but a de-cat on its own will not give you power, 2-3bhp at the most
