i teach Cisco IT Essentials which is basicly a Desktop Technician and PC Maintenence Course combined...this course prepares you for the Comptia A+ exams
The course is mainly self study on the internet at http://cisco.netacad.net but the students come in to take end of module tests and revise with me
This costs £50
If you're interested i may be able to set it up for you to do it over the internet all together?

The desktop tech one was all home learning and no need to go anywhere to sit exams but the PC maint one you had a written exam and Practical exam away from house...
You were Microsoft certified after exams with these ones...
Aj I will deffo keep you in mind i might fancy doing them mate.

The way it works is this:
You work through 16 modules, each is a different part if "ICT"...i.e the first section is Basic PC hardware/software.
The course progresses into more advanced stuff like Servers/Networking etc.
There is a module test for each one. The results of these tests dont count towards your final grade, its just a way to track your progress through the course.
You then sit the actual exam at a test centre somewhere (i think the test is about £120)

If these courses are for career considerations then i wouldnt recommend PC Maintenance out of those two.

Why you say that though?

Well PC Maintenance would be like the guys at PC World fixing PCs. Desktop support could be working for a shit hot company on lots of money with more scope for career progression IMO.
My mate does desktop support in the city, he's just graduated and is on £29k.

PC Maintenance doesn’t really pay a lot to be honest. It’s when you progress up to management or development work that ythe ££££ comes in
But you have to start somewhere. I started off on £50 per week and have progressed to ICT/Network manager in 5 years.
Not bad for someone having no IT experience when i started

Those looking for a career change, and those who just want to be able to fix thier home PC when they bugger it up

You do get a certificate from Cisco if you get 80% or more on your overall score (this is worked out by the results of your 16 module tests and also your final exam)
But this certificate isn’t anything to write home about, what the course does is prepares you for sitting the Comptia A+ exam which is industry recognised and is a great foundation to the CCNA course which is internationally recognised (which I also teach)

Aj are you in a college or private company?
My college would distance learning stuff although you are at a disadvantage where the classroom stuff is concerned.
Sure its cheaper than you were first quoted as well, about 170 quid for each semester (there are four).

Have a look on that Learn Direct Scotland site Mav, they give you something like £200 towards courses.

I work in a City Learning Centre for my teaching. Its funded directly by the local LEA which is why we can offer courses at such low prices.
We charge £50 per semester of CCNA (there are 4 of them) and the student must take the exams at a third party site which they have to also pay for.

Yeah distance learning can be hard sometimes depending on the type of course,
Most basic computer courses you can get away with. The new standard of IT Essentials has alot of virtual Labs (but nothing beats pulling an actual computer apart and putting it back together)

£50 is very cheap - how many hours contact you doing for that?
Also how much are the external exams? I think that is included in the 170 although I'm not sure. Just seeing how they compare.

Why is it the end of module "tests" count towards nothing?
The overall grade is based on any practical work and of course the final exam, all weighted percentages.

Ian - hours of contact is 2 hours per week, i'm not too sure on the cost of the exams to be honest. We dont really deal with that side of things...we jsut do the training for them
J-Me - When i mean the end of module test count for nothing...see my second post in this thread.
