There are a hell of a lot of fake ones about, so make sure you ring the issuing bank to confirm its all ok

My thoughts.
Personally I would only accept cash and would want it in the bank before handing over the keys/docs

You'd want to pay the cash in before handing the keys over? or have I misread that?

Robin,
If I sell a car I expect the buyer to turn up with the cash...we then drive to the bank and deposit the money into my account.
He/she can then drive off with the car/docs.
Better still a credit transfer....tbh in this day and age I simply dont see the need to accept a bankers draft when they are so easily forged, and the banks seem happy to reneg on them after accepting them.

A bankers draft can't be cancelled as far as I am aware, the bank only issues it if there is funds there and the funds are removed on time of issue..
But be aware they can take upto 5 days to clear as I found out when i sold my XE...Fucking Halifax

Ok so how do i check for a fake - without it obviously looking dodgy? Is there a reference number i can check with the bank, or would i be stuck with the data protection bollocks stopping me checking?

Not sure on a fake...
All bankers drafts will be printed and no writing on them...Must be codes or something that can be checked, sorry can't help though...

Exactly Mav.
But in this day of chip and pin what is the point?
If the funds are available they can bring cash...same bank?:- credit transfer (im sure that will work with other banks these days too)
Too many stories of drafts being declined after being accepted these days for my liking.

Ok, but why?
Surely if the money is in your hand, then the deal is done
I'd feel uneasy going to the bank in the middle of somewhere I don't know, with someone I don't know, to deposit my money without having the keys to the car in my hand TBH, the person could pay the money in then leg it without giving me the keys

i'd obviously prefer cash, but equally don't wanna piss the guy off and lose the sale - been trying to sell for ages!!!
Might see if he can try to meet during day or early Sat to pay it in. The guy seemed ok, but didn't really ask much. Hmmmm

I do get your point Robin
However, if the cash is given to the teller and the keys/docs given over in the bank there is (or should be) video evidence of the transaction....and if fake notes are used then its the banks problem for accepting them (together with all the other cash)
A fake draft will more than likely stand out like a sore thumb since it will invariably be checked....
