Am I being a complete muppet for not being able to work out why Edward Norton's version of Tyler doesn't know his own name?

Don't understand the question tbh
"Edward norton's version of tyler" - That doesn't sound right for starters, he doesn't imagine a 'version' of him, he imagines him, full stop. Tyler does know what his name is too, as he introduces himself on the plane.
It's true that Edward Norton never reveals his own name, but it is Jack.

Edward Norton is Tyler Durden. The Brad Pitt charactor is a figment of his imagination and represents all of his confident qualities etc.
A clue to this is when he tells his boss not to bring him every piece of paper he finds - He even references this.
Another clue, when he tells Marla the conversation is over and Brad Pitt puts words in to his mouth, thats because its him talking.
Marla also asks who he is talking to when she falls off the bed. Theres only them 2 there. Same in the kitchen.
Hes delusional.

50/50 right
Straight from wiki.
Some fans of the film refer to the narrator as "Jack", which is in reference to a scene in which he reads stories written from the perspective of a man's organs (e.g. "Jack's medulla oblongata"); the protagonists' lines in the official movie script also use the name "Jack" to denote them. Furthermore, a number of props from the film (such as a paycheck for the narrator) have the name "Jack Moore" on them, indicating that members of the film's crew also thought the narrator's name was Jack. The name "Jack" was "Joe" in the novel, which was changed in the film to avoid conflicts with Reader's Digest over the use of the name (the articles read by the narrator were featured in the magazine).

What I mean is, considering his name is Tyler, always has been and always will be... Why did he not realise that the Brad Pitt Tyler had the same name as himself?

He was leading two lives. When he was being called Tyler he was Tyler, when he was being 'Jack' then people would've been calling him 'Jack'.

Being delusional wouldn't make you not know your own name
Brett's answer was better.
