Just don't crash. You won't have to bother with the excess then.

How often do you claim? Its only in the event of you having a fairly big bump that its going to be an issue anyway. If you're worried about the excess, just go TPFT if the car is worth less than the £890. (Edit, to add that I can see its a GSI so it'll be worth a bit more), so maybe not as applicable.

I know what you mean Dan, I'm only on tpft because my car isnt rare and cost me less than £2000. Parts are easy to find so unless I kill it crashing into a lorry I doubt I'll claim.
Still, saving 'just dont crash' is a bit irresponsible, you might as well have NO insurance

I'm only fully comp, as it wasn't that much more than TPFT and because the car is not that common. Saying that, my excesses are quite low.
IIRC, I had a £850 excess on the RX7, which was bad enough, but I managed not to crash (that year at least )

TPFT means it covers Third partys (in case you crash into them) and your car against fire or theft. It doesn't mean you can drive third partys car. You need to check your policy for that, but if you're under 25, its unlikely you can.
