iron filings and rust thats all it is iiirc light it with some magnesium ribbon and a blow torch thatsbhow we used to make it in school anyway

Nope, rust (well, rust is hydrated iron oxide, this is just iron oxide) and fine aluminium powder. I also added some barium nitrate which actually makes thermate not thermite, much more reactive
