About to remove to give a good clean and see if my ECU light goes out 
Do I need to drain down the coolant - why and what's the easiest way to do this?

its a real bitch to get 2 the egr. well it is on my X16XE

yep, on your 12v, your egr valve is part of the thermostat housing IIRC...
3x e10 torx heads,
it will drain some of the coolant, but id just replace the valve.....as its a right ballache having to do it twice - if cleaning doesnt work
