Depends on your code. If you're on BR for example you get less allowance IIRC.

This is how tax is worked out:
10% = £0-£2,150 of taxable income
22% = £2,151-£33,300
40% = £33,301 and above

There are ways around paying the highest tax if you're earning around and about it, being paid by means of dividends for example.
You have to be careful and make sure its quarterly or yearly though so not to flag up on the revenues radar as a disguised salary.

Find out your proper rate, then get in touch with the Tax office to sort out a rebate
