Hi i am not to technical with a car but wish to become someone who does.
I read a post on a blog the other day about buying a new car which i will summarise:
------
Do research including a HPI check,to see if your car has been in a accident or stolen
Secondly check the price. 'What Car Review' website tells you what to expect to pay for the year and mileage for the car
Thirdly read customer reviews for a real opinion on the car but only use them as a guidline.
Fourthly test drive it and to analyze the cars functionality such as doe it drive well and does it make funny noises.
Finally have some common sense, if the seller is pushy it probably has something wrong with it, and if they wont let you test drive the car ask why not.
------
the source is from CarSpareFinder and the guy claims to be a vauxhall engine specialist.
what i wish to know is
1) any extra advice
2) is it worth doing the HPI checker when buying the 2004 vauxhall corsa?

Do some general research on the model to find weak spots/common faults
An example of this would be that a common fault on the Corsa B is that the B pillars crack and rust.
Find out common areas for rust. Also look out for signs of damage (i.e. creases inside doors where they may have been bent back after a break in...thus leaving them weak)

and yes a HPI check is wise on any age car. There are plenty of new-ish cars that get written off, not just older ones. I had one for my 2003 Corsa

I'd personallly say it's more important to HPi check a new car, as you stand to loose more money on it should it be dodgy, and it's more likely to be dodgy than an older car, due to being able to make more money from it.
If buying privatly, you need to be checking all the VIN/engine numbers on the V5 match those on the car - on the corsa they should be in the engine bay, underneath the tax disk on a plate on the dash, and in the drivers footwell under a plastic hatch in the floor .
