My dad is looking to buy my mum a 2 seater soft top (can be removable hardtop) and i recommended the MX-5 and MGF. With a budget max of £3000 a BMW / Merc etc are out of the running and hes obviously looking for as new a model as possible, with least miles etc etc etc etc. Also, no more than the 1.6 models will be required and i find it unlikely she will be bothered about CD players / AC and all that jazz.

The MGF is obviously going to come newer than an MX-5, but is it worth getting one instead of the Mazda?

Any reviews of either car would be nice (from people who have actually driven them / owned them, preferably not 'i heard car x was shit').

cheers

Dan

(PS if anyone wants to throw in any suggestions of a different model feel free)

You can't get a 1.6 MGF, so it'll have to be the MX5 (which is the better car anyway)

I'd go for the MX5 still, even with a 1.6

trust me, she wouldnt be revving it, their mondeo doesnt really go above 2k rpm when shes driving, so it isnt flat out mental driving, but more like 'general housewife duty' nipping to the shops and back, sometimes going to peterborough (20 miles of 40 - 60mph) and going to work.

The Mx5 everyday! i was talking to my friend about this a few days ago, apparently there is a new head for the K series engines that makes them fairly reliable, but they are costly.
My friend has an MX5 thats pushing 100k miles and other then routine maintenance he hasnt done a thing to it! The MX5 owners club have cars that have done over 150k that again have had no problems. They are so rock solid, the handling is amazing and the cars are great. Whilst the MG's can be a bit weeble like!!! My sister had an 02 MGTF 160 and my friends H reg MX5 is so much the better car!!!
The MX5 owners club is well worth joining and they have some really good days.
if you can go for an early 1.6 MX5 as they are pushing the same power as the later 1.8's, they then detuned the 1.6's so the 1.8's looked more powerful
