whats everyones approach to applying 'back to black' to the arches/ bumper tops??

as u usually, do it before i poliesh, but the meguirs stuff i currently use, makes the paintwork all greasy (where i miss the arch - and splats on the wing etc)
does anyone mask beforehand?

ive seen people mask all the uncolourcoded bits before buffing the car etc...
