Its the Spanish word for brave (same as Diablo is spanish for devil, murcilago is spanish for a type of bull). Its pronounced gai-ardo because the double l is a letter unto its own in the spanish alphabet, and is pronounced a bit like a y. (The reason Marbella is pronounced Marbaya)
