Stay in a hostel if you want cheap. We stayed in one that was right on the corner of the red light district by the Grasshopper for about €30 a night.
Drive there too if you don't want to pay a lot for flights. Either go from Calais or get the boat straight there from Hull.

I spent £150 on 3 nights AND flights.
BMI for flights, from Luton to Schipol, train from Schipol to the city, then tram/bus to the hotel.
You don't need to be right in the middle of the city, the bus service runs for about 20 hours a day and is free in the evenings (either that or they let us on without paying as they didn't understand us :lol
Our Hotel was bed and breakfast, and was about £30 a night, but was REALLY nice.
BMI give you food on the flight too, and it only takes about an hour.

So did we
We walked about 5 miles from the train station to our Hotel, when we could have got a tram from the train station to the bus depot, then the bus to the door of the hotel
Either way though, Hotel or Hostel, it's a cheap place to stay.
