Apart from reducing the compression ratio - what are the main differences between the normal 2.016v XE lump and the C20LET lump?
I have a C20XE lump and wondered if buying the LET lump is easier than converting and buying the Turbo / manifold and making the 20XE a LET lump effectively?
Any info would be great!
Thanks

yes, it was also designed for the engine to will be much better to just drop a LET in rather than piss about trying to turbo a NA engine

I understand this although for example my polo is supercharged - apart from the pistons and crank - it is the same block as any other sub1400 polo.
There are other factors tied in like sodium filled valves for higher temps in the CH etc but that is the info im after - can you simply rebuild a XE bottom end with LET pistons and crank etc? or just the pistons? or is turbo conversion kit about?
Any links / info / knowledge you guys can share would be ace!
Thanks
Dave

but rebuilding an engine will cost more than getting a an LET so i dont see the gains in turboing a 20XE

look if you can do an engine rebuild yourself then buying pistons as opposed to a whole block etc etc is a lot cheaper.
Buying an intercooler, Turbo, Manifold, downpipe etc on top is what will cost the money.
The LET engines i have seen for sale so far are not "cheap" and dont come with everything for complete conversions most of the time....
What is a rough price range you would expect to obtain a LET engine / head and ancilieries including turbo and downpipe etc...???

OK,
next question is what is the differences between the XE and LET blocks and heads?
Apart from the missing oil lines for the turbo and reducing the compression ratio somehow?
The reason i ask is looking at the LET turbo's the engines look exactly the same!
Sorry for sounding dumb here but i was hoping that you guys could help out with information about the engines....
is migweb any good for this info?

well that is most helpful...
Surely someone on here has some information as opposed to an opinion?

x16xe will handle better.

I agree handling is comprimised with a heavy engine that shouldn't be in the car - however - good shock / spring setup and a good driver will know how to make just as good progress with the extra weight and POWER!
Ive been looking on migweb and so far have found that i would need:
Use LET injectors - do they have a different flow rate than XE ones?
along with top hat - is this a LET head he refers too?
TB and poss AMM - Air Mass Meter? yeah?
Sounds easy enough - either LET pistons or thick metal plates and 2 headgaskets one either side to lower the compression ratio without LET pistons.
or use LET pistons which i have found a set of for £500 from courtney.
Head information and oil lines for the turbo are the parts im a bit hazy on now? Any ideas?

wha about ECU etc

ECU would need swopping for sure - not definate about the loom differences however...
Other than this i'd need to look into feul pumps and rails, regulators and intercooler....
Found a turbo manifold for £258 so up to £758 now without a turbo or downpipe yet!
Would be cheaper using HG's and plates although rebuilding the bottom end may be worthwhile while it is all getting done you see ....

Why would you need to remap a LET ECU if it is a std turbo setup for a LET ECU being used?

it is cheaper to sell the xe for about £400-500 and buy a LET for £1200ish and have the engine owing you £800. Buy an engine thats known to have been working fine until removal.
Doing it how youre talking could end up being all sorts of unnecessary hassle.
Pistons are definately different, not sure about rods, think theyre the same tbh. Rest of bottom end is the same. Cams are different, hence people using xe inlet cam on LET with more power etc. Injectors, Fuel pressure reg. all sorts.
dont bother wasting time and effort, but a LET!!!!!!!

LET AFM £60-£100
Turbo £150
top hat £20

LET Cams
LET Throttle Body
Amel Valve
All the pipe work
Sell your XE and buy a good LET, Unless you plan on rebuilding with all uprated stuff then look into a XE block and head.
Just so happens i have a 67k C20LET for sale with everything for £1200 (without gearbox)

THE ENGINE I RUN NOW IS BASED ON A C20XE WHICH IS CONVERTED TO TURBO. LUCKILY THE LET WAS BASED ON THE C20XE N/A COUSIN SO PARTS ARE INTERCHANGABLE TO A CERTAIN DEGREE. TO DO A PROPER JOB YOU NEED TO DO A SHITE LOAD OF WORK AND OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS I FOUND IT MAY OF BEEN CHEAPER TO BUY A TURBO ENGINE RATHER THAN CONVERT ALTHOUGH 1000-1500 NOTES IS ALOT IN ONE HIT!
YOU CAN RUN A TURBO ON A XE WITH MINIMUN MODIFICATION ALTHO I WOULD NOT RECOMEND IT AND IT IS ABIT UNRELIABLE. HERES THE LIST
TURBO
MANAFOLD
DOWNPIPE
BOOST HOSES
INTERCOOLER
INJECTORS
FPR
DOUBLE OR THICKER HEADGSKET
RETURN AND FEED FOR TURBO OIL
SOME KIND OF TOP HAT
THEN HAVE TO BLANK THE BREATHER TO THE THROTTLE BODY AND REROUTE THE HOSE PRETURBO BUT AFTER AFM
PUT A ONE WAY VALVE IN THE SMALL ROCKER COVER BREATHER HOSE
RELOCATE THE AFM PRE TURBO
LIKE I SAID A RECIPY FOR DISASTER REALLY BUT CAN GET AWAY WITH ABOUT 10PSI WITHOUT PINKING WITH ENOUGH FUEL PRESSURE, THUS RUNNING LIKE A BAG OF SHITE OFF BOOST

Nice one cheers guys,
That is most helpful.
As mentioned - easiest to get the LET setup - but trying to arse about with the XE is not worth my time!
Good to hear though it CAN be done - rather than simply - get an LET engine!!!!

You are right however CAN be done and feasibility were what i was looking for information on - i knew i could do it however as said weighing up the pro's and cons is what i wanted to discuss.
