I love folk that claim back their charges - perhaps if they didn't spend more money than they actually had in the first place they wouldn't need to go to the bother of claiming it back.
If you do claim it back, I wouldn't expect your bank to wish to retain you as a customer. I'd also expect in a few years that everyone will need to pay for a Bank Account

And love folk who seem to think that being on that high horse is perfectly fine.
The fact that bank charges are above what it costs in admin fees when someone is charged (avg. about £5) means that they are penalty charges, which is illegal. So should be claimed back.

Why am I on my high horse? Everyone sees banks as being in the wrong - Simple matter is that if you spend more than you have, or don't pay your debts then you get punished.
Now, do you think it is more or less sensible to have a lower penalty rate to discourage people from spending money they don't have?
Discuss.

so i you are saying that I shouldn't claim back £30 because I went overdrawn by a massive 50p which wasn't my fault as a DD came out a day early
get back on your high horse and ride on

it doesnt matter if you think its wrong or right.
Penalty charges are ILLEGAL, in other words they CANNOT take them off you. Regardless of if you think they are a deterrant or whatever. Id have no problem with banks charging the cost to cover admin charge, which is legal, but why should I give them money which they have illegally taken.
And I know some people have abused the banking system in the past, and those should be taken care of in some way. But there are a lot of people, like me, who may have gone a few quid at most over and still been charged £38.

Fair point actually, it shouldn't really be a detterant. I take your point there.
But....if you know what the penalty is for doing it, and you still did it then you can't really expect much else.
A few quid overdrawn here and there, may sound menial but where do you draw the line? Like 32mph is over the 30mph limit but you'll still get done for it.

yes I know that, and like I said I have no problem with having to pay the £4 or £5 to cover admin fees if I happened to go over (which was never on purpose and normally over a few quid WHILST I was waiting for a cheque to clear into my account - so the money was there).
But I dont agree witht he £30+ charges so dont see why people shouldnt claim them back.

should just threaten them with going to small claims, only costs a tiny amount and is worth it as you tend to get nearer the full amount.

Has anyone claimed back charges from RBS?
I've obtained a copy of all my statements going back 6yrs, and due to complete ignorance & stupidity up until about 2/3 years ago, it works out I've been charged into the £k's
Various stories report that banks are offering only half of the money back, is this normal to expect if I go ahead & submit a claim? Is it worth pursuing the full amount if they make such an offer?
How much would I actually be entitled to claim back? I understand that from a £30 charge, it may actually have cost them £4.50 in admin fee's - does that mean I'm entitled to only £25.50? or should I still claim for & expect to recieve the full £30?
I've photocopied all the pages of my statements tat contain charges, and highlighted each charge. I've also compiled a list of them including dates. Can someone suggest the best letter to use, based on experience of success?
Also, I found some information on a money website (this one) which states you can also claim back the interest.. what's the deal with this? Is it worth trying? Or would it more likely jeapordise/prolong the process?
Any advice would be great.. I've more or less got everything ready to post out on Monday morning
