I obviously want it to pass first time and not have any extra costs unless its vital. but what things can i check before the MOT. I know about bulbs but what other small things or large can i check.

check for excessive play in the wheel bearings? And the other basics like washer fluid and that the blades are all good and not falling apart

u can take the spare out if it is a bit dodgy will still pass,

check the exhaust aint blowing, n stuff like seatbelts aint frayed n the preten/catch are fine.

just check simple things, lights, tyres etc
spare wheel isnt testable

bulbs are definately worth a test as stated, mine went in today and i noticed last night that i had 2 bulbs out mine failed first time on emissions but passed second time round after a quick bomb around the block good luck

spare wheel is testable! It has to be correctly inflated and have the correct and legal tyre tread; however if you dont have a spare it doesnt come into the test

A SPAER WHEEL IS NOT A TESTABLE ITEM WE DONT EVEN LOOK AT IT!!!! IT CAN BOLD, FLAT, EXPOSED CORDS, WRONG SIZE IT DOSENT MATTER FOR THE MOT.
