When i signed up @ Mancat College 3 years back i got My Student Card's within around 15 minutes of walking through the door, Very Usefull 
So yea You could just "sign UP" for a course

not any more they have a long number across the front and a magnetic strip which either gets swiped or the person just looks at it and says thats fine.
all my old ones had a picture on the front new one looks more like a credit card

mine is incorporated into the actual university student card that you swipe into the library with.
Robin, never heard of 60p bus fares one, that just specific counties i take it?

in birmingham its 1.20 or the bus even though i drive now should get discounted parking and petrol

It's well easy to get one, just sign up for a course at college, enrol get the NUS and then quit!

at my college al you have to do is go into the student union bit abnd sign up pay 10er for the disocuint card version or free, dont know anyone that they have asked for prove that they are a student

They shouldn't get you any discounts anymore though. You need an NUS extra card which costs £10 to get discount.

Used to be a 60p bus fare anywhere for me when I was at college in 2003, but it might just be Northants I suppose.

i still use my college card (not my NUS) to get student discount in a variety of places, quite useful and much easier to fake
