Works fine for a while then it stops working and loads of pages wont display and it says java is not installed

How ever if you reboot its fine again.

Any ideas what to do, where can I find the settings?

Thanks very much Gav

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Java

I'd uninstall then go and get a fresh latest version from:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

If you have the new version then not sure what is up, some kind of software conflict maybe.

Test your java here:

check your IE java settings in tools/internet options/advanced.

You sure it's just the Java?, have you got a recent update of shockwave and flash players installed?. Sometimes helps to view certain pages. Also what about your active x controls? I'm not sure what you need to be enabled but a quick google might help. If not then I can only think of a software conflict and you might need an OS reinstall. I have no further ideas sorry
