I watched this last night again, it draws some interesting conclusions when you think about the story line.

Its easy to brush aside some anomalies as just "supernatural activites" or ghosts.

For instance, the question that I was asking myself, is that throughout the whole film it is portrayed that nothing is actually at the hotel and its all Jack just going crazy in his own mind. However if that is the case, who opens the pantry door when Jack is locked in??

Well after researching a few sites, it comes to light that you only "hear" the bolts being undone as do you only "hear" llyod the apparent ghosts, voice.

What couldve been represented was it was jacks imagination creating these noises, and he actually bashed his way out the pantry, or his wide didnt actually lock the door properly.

the photo at the end of Jack, and the references that hes always been there.

Again this is just a symbol, not necessarily that Jack himself has always been there, but whoever has been the caretaker has gone down the murderers route, and that instead of "Jack has always been there" is symbolics for "The caretaker has always been there"

However i think the hotel was always meant to have supernatural activities, and the hotel was coming "alive" hence Shelly seeing some odd occurances near the end.

You have spent an alarming amount of time looking up something irrelevant

Although, maybe the director wanted you to have to think about these things

IMO, its a combination of both: he is losing it, but the place is also haunted, and so 'doing things to his mind' etc....

The book is quite different to the film, and also the ending is completely different......

Well there is none of that chasing him in the snow in a maze....its just completely different, you will have to read the book as there is much more in the book. Its been quite a few years since I read it, but I remember there being quite a few flashbacks, and I think Jack once broke Dannys arm etc.....

Book is better than the film
