Looking to get a set of 15" alloys for my corsa b. I want to lower it between 40mm and 60mm. Would an offset of 50 fit my corsa and allow me to lower car by desired height?

should be ok, you would have to make sure it clears the suspension strut and other bits as 50 means they stick in the arches more than they should. But you could get some small spacers to space them out so yeah they would be fine.

Obviously its not ideal and if you can get away with not using them then you would'nt bother. But if you needed the 3mm spacers would'nt be a problem, plenty of people use them to clear big brakes etc.

ok cool thanks for all your help - so it would be 3mm spacers i'd need if they were required?
Also what do the offsets measure as in what do they mean just out of interest - new to all this?

I don't know how small spacers go, but I know someone makes 3mm ones which is why I said that.

Basically the offset determines where the wheels sit in relation to the hub.

Ideal offset for a corsa is 49, the lower the offset the more they stick out of the arches. So 37 would stick out quite a bit. Ideally you would get an offset of about 45-49 and you should be able to lower a fair bit and not have problems. On 49 you can lower to silly amounts.

For instance these are 49 offset and there is no springs on the rear in this pic:
