i've also heard it requires a lot of maintenance? i.e rubbing down, re-varishing a lot to protect it for all weathers everyyear?

I have decking on my ptio area, pain in the a*se this time of year as its just so slippy you could seriously hurt yourself, but like said above, rub it down and paint it every year it shouldnt be too bad, also dont put it right upto the brickwork on your house as it will cause damp over a long period of time, just have a border of pebbles etc. I am taking all mine up when the weather gets a bit better and having slabs put down along with the garden landscaped too

is it just flat planks of wood or gooved decking? Grooved stuff shouldnt be slippy at all TBH.
