You remove the VIN plate when you do a colour change on the car. You need to paint under it.

I'm not sure you'll even need them if the car is never sold.

Police might get a bit confused though. They will pull me over when I'm driving it and will want to look under the bonnet when it comes up as a 2.0 on thier computer...

Ask to look at theirs and do a data check

That was my thinking exactly!

The Plate was removed on mine when it was repaired as i bought it CAT D.
As for MOT i never had any problems but i just suspected that the VIN was just for easy viewing of all numbers on the car (engine/chassis/paint code) and it wasn't that important, £105.75 later i found out i was wrong!
