what problems can this cause?

had head gasket changed about 5k ago and i topped up the oil about 4k ago

but had engine trouble so checked oile and there wasnt much in there

the car has been knocking and idea what it could be and whether it was caused by no oil or whether having no oil was caused by the knocking?

The tapping is the tappets i belive? Just make sure youve topped it up now! Shouldnt do much harm, mines gone a few times with no oil, and sometimes ive checked the dip stick and its been dry! Eeek, i hate oil leeks

if theres not enough oil then the pressure will be wrong hence the tappets tappeting? if mine becomes a bit tappety a little top up of oil quietens it down.

Did the oil light not come on as this indicates low oil PRESSURE not low oil?
