Where do you stand if you take your car to a garage and they diagnose the fault and fix it you pay etc but then you drive the car the next day and the problem is still there?

My mate took his megane to a garage where he had a knocking noise on full lock, they said he needed a new driveshaft so he paid them and they replaced it, but the noise was still there a few days after.

I wonder where you stand as the garage have effectively given you the wrong info and youve paid money for no reason, cna you get your money back?

If they diagnosed it as that and replaced it, and its still there you should be able to take it back...

If he went upto the garage and said i needa new driveshaft because of the knocking then he wont.

i think they would look at the car for free but would still charge you for parts.

Did they give it back saying it was now sorted? Doesn't sound like they even bothered to test it.

If I went there and said 'sort the knock' I would expect to pay the bill and that to have happened.

Depends if the garage treat the inspection and fitment as one job or two.

If the knock is still there and it was the garage that diagnosed that it was coming from driveshaft sure they would be something they would have to do...

what would they have to do though? issue a refund? but then theres a new part on the car that the garage has paid for, but like i said it didnt need to replacing so is also an uneeded cost for my friend.

The only thing they can do is take it back off and refit the old part but cant see this happening

If you take it back to the garage then they may say that the driveshaft was contributing to the knocking noise. However i would expect most garages to at least have another look at it for free and most will fix it for free but may charge for another part. Most garages would rather not get a bad rep and to help as much as possible.

I had this exact problem regarding a coil pack on my first car (Corsa sport) with Vauxhall...the problem was not fixed and I asked for my original coil pack to be put back on...they said they couldnt as they had lost it...

SO

I refused to pay...they gave up in the end...
