I suspect the aircraft flew straight into a severe storm cloud, hence there would have been horrendous windshear. the aircraft would have been at least +30 degrees from the radian, Hence the aircraft would have been crabbing into the wind, and the brunt of the hailstorm being subjected into one side of the aircraft
