Which is the best choice considering i have about 3500 to spend? Focus would probably be a 1.6 or 1.8 zetec and the astra would be a 1.6 16v (unsure of trim level)

Focus is a much nicer Car IMO, Looks better & Drives better no contest really, Only bias Griffin nuts will vote the Astra.

look at the focus dash and then pick the astra

haha yeah, only thing I don't like about Fords - they have the same stereo's and bits in the most luxurious Mondeo as you do the Transit van

asmuch as i love my vauxhalls i do have a focus tdci and it a shit load better than a mk4 astra

focus is nice and I have always liked the gear shift in fords but make sure you get one with a black interior/dash if you get a focus, mate had one with a grey dash and it was horrible. £3.5k should get a good one tho. I would also go for a 1.8 focus or a 1.8 astra sri as i have an escort for winter and its a 1.6 zetec and its a bit sluggish. Astra is good as well, my brother has the mk4 gsi turbo and i love it
