1995 AC Cobra (Gardner Douglas GD427 Euro) (Band 7)
Engine: Small Block Chevrolet V8, 5700cc - "Saturday Night Special"
Fuel system: Twin-barrel Holley with Edelbrock manifolds
Power output: in excess of 450bhp @ 5500rpm
Max speed: Theoretically over 200mph but you'd have to mad to try.
Acceleration 0-60 mph: sub 4 sec
Weight: 900 Kg
They called it 'The Widowmaker' - the original AC Cobra was one of the real icons of the 60's. Designed and built by racer Carroll Shelby after being snubbed by Enzo Ferrari, the sole purpose of the Cobra was to bite Ferrari where it hurt most - on the track. BY taking the pretty but underpowered AC Ace, and shoehorning as large an engine as he could fit into it, the Cobra was born. The ultimate incarnation of these cars was the 427. Here, Shelby fitted a 7.0 litre Ford V8, producing 425bhp, and in 1967 British journalist John Bolster recorded a top speed figure of 165mph and the then unbelieveable 0-60mph time of 4.2 seconds. This feat established the Cobra 427 as the worlds fastest accelerating production car, and a favourite on bedroom posters around the world. Famously Shelby used to take prospective buyers for test drives, during which he would place a $100 bill on the window, and any passenger who could grab it while Shelby was accelerating was allowed to keep the money. No one ever did.
The UK replica industry seized upon the Cobra for several reasons, partly it's beauty, partly it's simplicity, but also because it was comparatively rare. Many manufacturers make kits for the car, with various engine options ranging from a 2.0 litre Ford Pinto upto the 7.0 litre monster. Many stick with the original chassis formula that made the original such a brute and so very dangerous to drive. One company stands alone in the crowd of Cobra replica makers in offering a specially designed chassis, featuring Caterham-style double-wishbone suspension at both front and back. This car is the Gardner-Douglas Euro 427, and this arrangement ensures that the car drives as a modern sports car.
The car that the Classic Car Club has obtained for members is indeed a Gardner-Douglas Euro 427. Fitted with a 'Saturday Night Special' tuned 5.7 litre Chevy engine, it has a very similar power output to the original. Whilst heads turn as you drive by, it is not due to the pretty looks, but the noise the car makes is unlike anything you will have heard away from a racetrack. Quite simply the most fun you can have in the summer.

1981 Delorean DMC12 (Band 6)
Engine: Rear mounted V6, 2850cc
Fuel system: Bosch K-Jetronic Fuel Injection
Power output: 130bhp @ 5500rpm
Max speed: 110mph
Acceleration 0-60 mph: 10 sec
Weight: 1290 Kg
The Delorean DMC12 is not a car for shy retiring types! Nor was it ever supposed to be. It was aimed at middle class American men to be a stylish, affordable safety car priced at $12,000 (hence the name) that would be perfect for post oil crisis USA. But in a story that has been retold many times, it was never to be. Bankruptcy, drugs charges and UK government bungs made this a story that ought to be told on the silver screen. But, as we all know, the car's rise to automotive stardom was to be as a performer rather than the storyline!
John Zachary Delorean rose through the ranks at GM, and in the late 60's at 44 was the youngest ever manager of Chevrolet. But that wasn't enough. He set up on his own to create what he saw as an alternative to European sports coupes. From day one the project was ethically driven (!) with fuel economy, safety and longetivity all important. The famed stainless steel body was as a result of the latter need, and had the benefit of not needing environmentally unfriendly paint. Delorean arranged for Giugiaro to design the car, and Lotus to engineer it - how could it fail! - all he needed was financing and a factory. After talks with various countries, he turned to British Government which offered £85 million to develop a site in the unemployment blackspot of Dunmurry, Belfast.
Although it was supposed to be priced at $12,000, by the time customer cars were ready in 1981 the price had risen to over $25,000 - the same price as a Ferrari 308GTB, more than a 911 3.0SC and lots more than a Lotus Esprit, all of which recieved far more critical acclaim. With these problems, the Delorean empire began to fall. After the first year, more than 2/3 of production was still sitting on the Belfast dockside waiting to be ordered, and when Delorean embarked on an ill-advised drugs trafficking plan to raise more finance, and the tabloid outrage doomed the already wobbly company. In 1984 all assets of the company were auctioned off - the body dies were bought by a fish farmer to be used as anchor points in a freshwater lake, and Delorean himself turned to religion.
And then came 'Back to the Future' - at the time the car was really only known to car buffs, but gained instant notoreity - most of the western world knows, recognises it, but has enever seen one on the road! It's actually pretty good, and certainly better than hearsay would have you believe. It's no sportscar, but cruises around in a pleasing way doubtless as John Delorean originally intended. But what it truly excels at is head turning. And while I've driven lots of classic and exotica, this car is Champions League to the other cars SPL.... Join the club and see if you agree with me!

1968 Ford Mustang V8 Convertible (Band 5)
Engine: pushrod 16 valve V8, 5736cc
Fuel system: twin-barrel Holley with MSD ignition
Power output: 350bhp @ 4800rpm
Max speed: 130+mph
Acceleration 0-60 mph: 6.5 sec
Weight: 1165 Kg
The Ford Mustang was the first car to become a success through the efforts of marketing rather than looks or engineering. Not to say that it was a bad car – by the then standards in America, it was small and nimble! Difficult to believe whilst manoeuvring through Edinburgh, but remember America was, and still largely is empty with wide straight roads.
The brainchild of Henry Ford II and General Manager Lee Iacocca, the Mustang was intended as a ‘personal’ car. Although more than 680,000 were made in the first year after launch in April 1964, the options list was huge, the many thousands of permutations of the different available options allowed buyers to individualise their car.
In 1968 the Mustang started to evolve and improve. The options of disc brakes and a 7 litre engine started to turn the Mustang into what is now known as a ‘Muscle Car’. Through 3 or more evolutions, largely following automotive fashion, the Mustang continues today, but about all that has been carried into the modern ‘Stang from 1964 is the concept, and the badge.
Our model is a convertible from 1968, and has a 351 Windsor V8 engine (about 5.7 litres). Whilst this is most definitely not a ‘lazy’ V8, it is most at home burbling around town. A sports car it is not – be very wary of the brakes, and with less than secure roadholding in the wet, plus abysmal scuttle shake, this is not a car to try corners in..... With a car as heavy as this, power steering is a must, and totally transforms the driving experience. Get your shades ready…
