If you were emailing a company to ask if they happen to have any job opportunities (without having seen an advert saying so etc), how would you recommend beginning it? I dont have a specific person to email so I'm leaning towards either "Dear Sir or Madam" or "Dear Sirs" but am not really sure.

Normally I'd go with "Dear Sirs" but dont want some pedantic, girl power-loving feminist receptionist binning the email before anyone else gets to see it

Ash, could you not do a little bit of online research into the company and try to finds the email address of the person in charge of recruitment?

If you can't, or it happens to be an email which could go to either a male or female, I would begin it 'Dear Sir or Madam'.

The comapny's website is pretty vague, with just a general email. I could FAO it to the MD but wouldn't that be a case of jumping the gun?

"FAO: Recruitment at xxx"

That could work... then "Dear Sir or Madam" to begin the email?

Dont start it FAO Recruitment as there is a strong possibility that they will assume its from a Recruitment Consultancy and the letter will go straight in the bin.

I would make some calls and find out who you need to address it to. Far better to have a name on the letter.

The correct start would be

"Dear Sir / Madam"

Or

"To whom it may concern"
