I txt my mate that I went to college with to do my HNC to ask him how much he is on money wise. Doing basically the same job as me but for a firm thats quite a bit bigger than who I work for.

He said he is on 20k. Fuck me, I'm only on an apprentice's wage which is less than 10k a year... get a payrise in January but nothing has been said about how much...

Think I should be going for 16/17k taking into account that we are a smaller company...

Whats the best way to go about asking for more money?

print of job descriptions with wages similar to your own, take them to your appraisal.

He is the sort of guy that will say to me that I have to take on more responsibilities if I want to be paid more. Where as the way I see it I shouldn't have to as he is underpaying me to start with...

Cheers for the link Robbo. Looking at that site now.

TBH I think you should only get a payrise when your boss thinks you deserve it.

if your are actually an apprentice its going to be hard justifying extra money for no responsibilities.

my scenario is a bit more complicated as im in about 4 different job roles at the moment, and while i dont mind helping out, sometimes the managers take the piss. im currently doing a job which should pay about 13-15k a year for less than 10k a year. my direct boss thinks im too soft and overly generous (i see it as once i go they're fcuked without me)

I am on an apprentice CAD technicians wage still even though I am now the office's main CAD technician and doing a hell of alot more complicated drawings than when I started out. Plus I now have an ONC, a HNC & a CAD qualification which I didn't have when I started.

Basically I am now doing a CAD technicians job on apprentice wages. I'm going to see if there are any jobs going elsewhere as a back up as I am sure I would be able to get double the money I am on elsewhere but if I can get that or close enough to it here then I will stay

Wow just found out one of the only other firms in town (quite a bit bigger than us aswell) are recruiting at the moment!

Going to send my CV to them (when I've written it ) and see what they say!

Yep best way to get an offer of a wage rise is to start looking elsewhere & get offered another job, then you aproach your manager with your weeks notice & see how much your worth to him to keep

Aye defo going to make contact with this other company and see if they can offer me anything.

Its probably best to move on from here anyway TBH. I've been here for 5 years pretty much since I left school. I dont feel like over the past 3 years that I've got anywhere.

I've gained qualifications and knowledge but the best way to put this is that I feel like I am being 'spoon fed' what to do all the time, never get taught how to do things. If you had asked me what I saw myself doing in this office now, 3 years ago I'd have said I'd be running the drawing side of the office. I'd be given jobs to do then I'd be left alone to put the drawings together for it. Whereas in reality my boss interfers all the time. I'm not even allowed to put together a drawing how I want without him saying "I'd prefer the txt for that title to be bigger/smaller". I'm getting treated like a monkey being told what to do all the time rather than teach me how to do things on my own...

I need to move to a bigger office thats more up to date and thats going to give me opportunities to work my way up as at the moment I'm not learning anything and never will!

So I've got 5 years work experience thats probably equal to 2-3 years experience in reality!
