i was going to embark on a project to create my own media centre by building the machine and writing the GUI

But this seems so much easier..

someone else is selling the same for £98 + £8 p&p.....
Not sure if they are any good, but if you're after a small device then freecom do a box and tvix do a box that is has pretty good reviews, especially as it does HD (DVI port) + has component connections as well as S-video, optical/coxial digital audio etc

amazon have a black one with card reader, DVD drive but it says limited availbility
