I used to own a 1.2 8v merit and replaced it with a 1.4 sri C. I dont my mates GSI the other day and loved it much more than my C.
Dose that sound normal in the terms of me wanting the older car?

please spare me with the b being nicer to drive than a c, take it from somone that owns both the c is far better car, its just your 1.4 hasnt the power/torque of the 1.6.

buy a nice gsi, save some cash for a bit and then get something faster as you get older

C is newer so always going to be 'better' as in things going wrong etc...But I still prefer the shpae of a nice GSI........
