Corsa 1996 sport 1.6 16v 66k on clock!
hey people ill try and make this short and sweet!
I have been (or did) hearing strange noises comming from one of my pullies was comming and going all the time (so this didnt really bother me at the time..... squeeking and rustling noise)! This went on for a week or so. On sunday i was gonna take it round to a friends to see what the problem was as he himself is a mechanic! Started the car on a sunday lunch time and suddenly bang! It was splutting and banging (sounded like a machine gun inside the engine) the revs where bouncing up and down like a heap ho! I immediatly turned the ignition off! Removed the the plastic cover around the cams (timing belt area) and to my horrifing sight i seen one of the bearings below the cam pulleys had collapsed ( completely shattered)! The timing belt not only lost tension and a bearing shattered but now i think i have bent valves and one screwed up corsa!
If this wasnt enough!!!! I started noticing the power steering pump is leaking with fluid all on my garage floor and now the coolent is leaking from the gasket thermostat! This couldnt of happend at a worse time with xmas comming! have been looking at new engines off ebay for around 200 + mark. this would probally save me a fortune! Im just so gutted as i have spent 1200 on a full respray and was in the process of buying allieso speedlines! Now i will have to spend countless hours under the bonnet trying to revive the corsa! worst comes to worst i will end up scraping the car!
any ideas on what to do? ie new engine get head + valves sorted (large amount of money) or send the corsa to the grave? Im also finding it very depressing not having the car as it was a dream to drive! Anyone had this problem at all?

Unlucky mate, sounds like a right mare. Don't scrap the car because the engines gone....just do it all after Xmas if I were you.
Either that or sell it as a non-runner perfect for XE conversion.

No thats ignoring a nasty rattling noise, which turned out to be a roller collapsing.

its your own fault for not servicing the engine and not taking notice of the noisy bearings in the idler pulleys.

i did service it 426 miles ago. oil, fuel filter, breaks, leads, spark plugs, engine coolent two front wheel bearings ..i have had the car 3 months! The timing belt was done 2k ago! but the bearings wernt done at all!!! The belt still has the markings on it for the timing! I know im stupid for not looking at it sooner! ANy ideas on why there is loads of liquid like (water) under the power stearing pump! I also have a leaking thermostate gasket! I can see coolent leaking from underneath the powerstearing pump! but the other seems to be a clear colour! Im puting the new bearings in over the wknd with a new timing belt etc...if this noise occurs again im taking the head off to have a look! if the damage is bad the car will be going for spares! The car is in mint condition with the new respray interior is gleaming! with no marks! I shall this what comes at the weekend with this!

if the cambelt was done by the previous owner then you just take it its alright, i know where your coming from in that respect...
thing is though its not the belt which really needs changing as its not that which will really fail unless it gets oil contamination or something and then starts to break down, its always the rollers...
alot of garages just take the cheap option, leave the rollers, do the belt, end of... bloke i was speaking to who used to be a foreman at an audi garage said the same, there was a garage across the road from his dealership doing belt changes for half the cost of the audi garage, but unlike the audi garage he wasnt doing the rollers.
car came in, belt changed, about 10 miles later a roller collapsed, 2 new heads please (was a V6)
so saving a few quid as he was to earn himself more money, he ended up loosing out as he had to get 2 new heads & sort it, costing near £1000...
