How much does it cost and how long does it take

At a DVLA office, instant.

By post perhaps 14 days.

Costs 80 to assign straight to another vehicle. Add 25 to put it on a retention certificate.

now has changed, i did mine last week and basically u go into the dvla, keep ur plate on untill they send u the paper work and new tax disks which takes around 2 weeks!

Yeah DVLA no longer does it over the counter!!

they do it over the counter but for your log book to come through and everything then it will be around 3 weeks!

they do it over the counter but for your log book to come through and everything then it will be up to 10 weeks


And it can take that long although doesnt normally

If the car is going Friday then you're screwed as you if putting on retention you cant sell it unless you have the docs back. I had that problem back in Feb

best thing you could do is sell the car to the new owner with the plate on it and ask them to sign a disclaimer that they will retain the plate for you and transfer it back into your name. Not sure on the in's and out's of this but it's the only solution I can think of if you want the car gone by Friday
