Literally...just got home now, was on the way back and all of a sudden I hear a 'clunk' and got no gears, they will all engage (reverse gears still makes the usual slight whine) but theres no drive the the wheels, not a CV joint as they're both solid, also appears to be oil pouring out from the nearside part of the gearbox where the shaft goes into the box?
My dad reckons possibly sheared off the shaft...I'm a bit boggled
1.2 8v btw

Common problem with corsa gearboxes perhaps? Will strip the nearside whell and hub off, see if I can pull the shaft off and see whats happened

Dont think so because it selects all the gears, i.e. makes the same whining noise in reverse as it did when it was working, also I was taking off in 1st gear at the time and clunk...lost all drive in every gear

just wondered, because i had my linkage come undone before, with a clunk, then no drive.
sounds like a shaft has popped out though.

Didnt think to look to be honest...Was just thinking, I have a gearbox on my 97 p reg corsa, would this be a direct drop in? Is a 1.2 8v, but was just thinking would it have the electronic gearbox sender thingy for the speedo, or cable?

Would this enable all the oil to exit into a puddle on the floor?

Am in the process of getting the hub off now, removed the strut and brake calipers for a bit more movement, what sort of oil should be used in the gearbox, and how much?
Also where do you put it in?

removed the brake calliper? why?
all you need to remove is the 2 strut bolts and the 2 bottom arm/tie bar bolts and the bub will be free to move arount. then remove the driveshaft retaining split pin and nut and pull the shaft from the hub and the gearbox.
use gearbox oil (dextron2 I think) and fill it up through the breather on top of the box. use a piece of pipe attatched to a funnell. to check the level remove the drain plug from the passenger side of the gearbox as you look at it from the wheelarch its just to the right of where the shaft goes in. either a 13 or 15mm plug.

removed the calipers just so I could move the hub around a bit more, was only 2 allen key bolts.
Got the shaft out, seems to be all there, although after the splined bit on the shaft (which goes into the gearbox) something appears to have sheared off?
I can push the shaft back in freely but theres nothing stopping it popping back out again that I can see?
Pics to follow, they'll explain it better Cheers Dave for the advice matey

Starting to strip

All I could see of the shaft in the gearbox

The oil leaking out

The broken end of the shaft

Another

And a view inside the gearbox of the diff internals?

Been on the phone to vauxhall and they say theres meant to be a spring loaded clip on the end of this shaft, so I take it thats whats broken off

looks like the end of the shaft has come off, along with the retaining clip
oh and get that caliper tied up so the weight isnt hanging on the flexi pipe otherwise you will need a new one of those as well!

finished putting my car back together about half an hour ago
Tested it on axle stands, appears to be all good, one question though, how the fnarg did the end of the shaft break off??
On the other corsa a good sharp pull and out it came?
