To run my enigne in? going to have done this week -

Pistion rings
Headgasket kit
cambelt
And something done to the bore of the cylinders

its reccomended 1000miles at no more than 50mph to bed the gaskets in

do you mean head skimmed?

What sorta RPM shouldnt I go over?

Normally its only revs, not car speed you need to watch. On most 'new' cars it tends to be 3,000rpm.

just dont give it much for 1000miles. its really annoying on carriageways and motorways but trust me it saves blowing your gasket

after a headgasket job i wouldnt be looking at running it in at all.

The only thing that needs running in is the rings!

younger mechanics say 500 older ones say 1000... and its usually the older ones that are right

general procedure:

1.drive 200 miles below 3000 rpm. use mixed revs, dont just sit on the motorway for 200 miles.

2.next 200 miles the same but up to 4000 rpm

3.change the oil an filter

4.drive 400 miles up to 5000 rpm with mixed driving again.

change the oil for standard gm 10w 40 stuff andfilter and there you have it. take it easy for a few more miles but theres no point revving these engines past 6k anyway as the power drops off after 6.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING IS TO USE A GOOD GRADE OF MINERAL OIL DURING THE RUNNING IN PROCEDURE. NOT SEMI SYNTH OR FULLY SYNTH. MAKE SURE THE GARAGE DO THIS.

Google bedding in engines. The bores will e honed. This is like skimming a very very thin layer off and leaving a rough surface behind for the piston rings to wear in to. The idea of this is to get a good seal between the bore and ring. The idea of keeping the RPM low is to stop the bores from glazing over whilst bedding in. If this isn’t kept to then the bores will glaze, there will be a lost of power and compression and if the oil rings don't seal properly then the engine can smoke too.

I personally when bedding engines in go as gently as possible at first for 250miles on "round town" journeys constantly changing the load on the rings but not letting it rev very high at all but not letting the engine labour. After that I usually let it rev 750rpm more up to 500 miles and take it easy up to 1000miles still going no higher than 4k rpm.

Oh and on another note, gaskets don't need bedding in.

was there not an argument a little while ago that running in time isnt whats best - especially for high performance engines. I never understood it myself btu the general concensus was that it was ebtetr to run the engine normally or even over-run it (but nto thrash its nuts off) in order to stress the componentry early and to an exceeded amount than they would get normally?

I cant remember the overall thing but sure it was up on here and Mig a while ago
