someone I play football with does Karate and says it's great. He asked me last night at the pub whether or not I would be interested in doing it. At first I thought they only taught you the sport kind of Karate (ie hitting people for points etc) and I wasn't too interested in that. However after talking to him about it last night he said they actually teach people Karate so that they can defend themselves.

I would love to take down some of the chavs round near where I live with a chop to the throat

Anyone on here do anything like this? I think it would be good just from a fitness point of view.

care to give your reasons as to why you think Judo is better Rob?

Cheers mate.

Giggle Muffin - yeah I think it would be fun as well, though quite painful at times I've always wanted to learn something like this.

I used to do it did a few belts but got bored.

You have to be really good and have had years of practice to survive a typical street fight using it and it takes a lot of commitment and fitness

ive done karate since i was 7 and found it very useful. I learnt it as an art rather than a sport. If you were looking to do something more competitive take up Boxing etc. I do karate Muay Thai and Boxing and find that Karate is probably the best of the three as an art. However this is depending on your club and instructor.

from what I was being told last night they teach it as an art rather than a sport. They get new guys come in wanting to learn who have been taught it from a sport's based angle and they jump around like they're fcuking Bruce Lee thinking they're all good. Then someone takes them down and they whinge about how they're not allowed to do that or whatever

For instance, my manager was sparring with a new bloke who thought he was the nuts. This bloke was on 1 foot and kept on kicking him in the side whilst remaining on one foot (sort of just flicking his lower leg I guess). My manager blocked the first 5 or 6 and then punched the fcuker in the balls
