Worked at an electronics store for just over a month. I'm 19, and at the interview I was told the salary was "average". Turns out, it's £4.57ph, 27p above minimum wage, until that increses on 1st October to just 2p below my hourly rate. Other 19 year olds in the store are earning in excess of £5 an hour. I mentioned this to my manager today who told me there was nothing that can be done and thats just what head office has allocated me. Apparently, within the company, there isn't a fixed wage for under 21's. I then asked would it be possible for extra hours as I am struggling to pay bills by doing 15 per week. I was told this was not going to happen as the wage bill for my store is above the company's national average and the next departing member of staff will not be replaced. I worked an overtime bank holiday, which did not appear in my pay slip.
When I applied for the job, just over 6 weeks ago, I dropped a CV off at PC World at the same time. My current employers had me working in their store within 3 days, whereas PC World took just over 2 weeks. I was offered the job at PC world, but refused it despite being offered more money per hour, and more hours. I was told that there will be a job position for me should my situation change at ****** in the future. This was because I had had further discussions with my manager about the offer, which they (******) said they would do their best to match.
No change after two weeks, despite bringing this to the attention of management on a number of occasions, and fed excuse after excuse. Thinking of going to have a wee chat with Mr. PC World and giving my notice at ******.
I really like working at ******, but the manager is a bitch and the rate of pay is making it difficult.
Opinions?
Cheers.

my place is like this, although i can pratically run the store and others can't even lock up or work unsupervised i get about 10p an hour more, its a joke. They started a scheme up where you got bronze, silver and gold and got a pay rise after doing some tests, nearly 2 years on and still no sign of the silver award.
cocks!

and they keep doing so because you let them
If you are unhappy, quit, leave, demand rise etc etc. If you are worth the extra you think you are due they will pay.
Job depending ofcourse - the lesser skilled the job, the more likely they will just say 'fuck off then'

Not really Phil, if you work for somewhere that treats you badly then why not tell people?
Would make me think twice if a few people on here who also worked there said that they had been treated the same as you
PS - Move with the money as Ians said!

That's for the advice... I'm leaving maplin and i've started applying for computer technical jobs in various places, where I'd earn 4-5 times as much as I am in Maplin. Thanks!

To be honest though, there isn't all that much wrong with Maplin as a company. Just my store's management. I'll still be using them as my 1st point of call for electronic goodness.

Its a good shop, they just get away with what they can. Thats not the first time I've heard that of that type of thing from that company.
I'm quite sure its not exclusive to them though. If employees are willing to work like that then the company will continue to operate in that way. Nothing wrong in it really.
You just need to be brave and move about. I'm quite sure if you move jobs and dislike it there in the new post there will be opportunities to move again. The good news is that you generally get a rise every time you do due to your increasing level of experience.
Just don't do it too often so it looks like you can't hold something down.
