Me and my mate are going to buy a montain/down hill bike (i am not up to speed with everything about bikes). I know that we will need a full or front suspension bikes.

I feel like i need to do more exercise so deciding to take up biking, i.e. go on down hill tracks and just generally bike cross country.

Could anyone tell me what would be the best bike to do this? also which are good make bikes.

Also any links to good sites?

I custom built my own last lear. Agree with post about full suspension. A lot of your energy goes into the rear spring instead of the cranks. Get a decent lightweight model, with front suspension, prefereably a rockshox fork. Avoid Marzocchi, I had a £450 X-Fly, and the seals went on it after 18 months. U2U for more info. I used to work in a bike shop too!

As for sites... check out Merlin cycles. They make their own frames which are awesome value for money if you wanna build your own. Their parts are pretty cheap too. Best place is chainreactioncycles.com. By far the cheapest, but don't do much in the way of complete bikes. Buy an MBR magazine or MBUK. Usually find loads of decent stuff in there.

if you dont want to spend a fortune, but want a decent tough bike with good components, look at Giant. mine is absolutely superb, and cost about £400. have since upgraded to hydraulic discs because the cable ones werent much kop

The specialized epic (i think) is a great as it has some special super rear shock with a brain apparently

Ive always used specialized but to be honest i dont know what there like in that price range.

Giant, Scott or Specialized are pretty good imo. Konas have light frames but the spec isnt much.

Brought it from DMR Direct for 1800. Ive hardly had any use out of it, and the only reason for sale is because i did this to my gsxr:

so the extra cash would help Otherwise i wouldnt sell it

Ive had a specialized P3, lovely bike, was around 750quid with the spec i had, but you can pick them up cheaper, great bikes, really strong frames, and good allrounder really for a new cumer.

as people above said, i wouldn't bother with a full suspension for what you're planning on doing. go for a "dual slalom" style bike with just the front suspension etc, i can also recommend merlin, i've had a frame of theirs for years and theres nothing wring with it whatsoever

or alternatively if you're planning on coming to the National Meet at the end of this month at Leisure Lakes, they have a good bike shop on site

I was too young to drive. I regret it now. As agree with Merlin frame, it's what mine's built on.

Did you have a head on?

I crashed my bike recently then it hit a car on its trip down the road, got away with bent forks and mangled bodywork.

As Cybermonkey said, look at Giant Bikes. I bought a Giant Terrago, and it has front suspension, hydraulic disc brakes and stuff

downhill biking is better with a full sus, but then takes a lot of energy out of you, when riding long distance, you could get a rear shcocked that locks so tat it acts a s a hard tail, but generally these bikes weigh a lot more.
Specialised p3 is a nice bike for general use tho

what ant said, if your doing downill, u need full sus, and only a few gears, but if your going to be doin more xcountry hard tails are better, DONT AVOID marzzochi like somebody said, they arevery good, get forks with lock out on front and back if you can, if you can lock your front forks uphills become much easier and locking the back ones will make it less likely to loose power when pedaling
