If you buy a ticket for a train that leaves at 11.23, but you actually get on the train that leaves on 10.23, what will happen to you when the inspector fella comes round??
Would you get thrown off or just be asked to pay the difference?? Both trains going to the same destination.

Probably depends how much of an arse the guy/gal is, and wether the train is packed or not.

Booking via Trainline.com so not sure 
Basically I want to go from Sheffield to Birmingham. When I looked last night you could get a ticket for £9.00, just confirmed times with a mate and gone on tonight to book. That option is not available anymore, and next cheapest ticket is something like £30  There is however the £9.00 tickets available for the later train. Just thinking I could buy one for that then claim i'd just got on at wrong time

in that case it will only work if the conductor doesnt notice if he does i dont know the penalty
should say somewhere

Normall penalty is you get 7 days to pay the difference, if not your looking at a £200 odd fine

i used trains alot and always book through trainline.com
i wouldnt risk it personally

I have done it in the past, aslong as it was the same train company and some seats are available they were fine.
If not I expect they'll just make you pay the diff.

it could go any way thats why i wouldnt risk it
you could buy the right ticket and they dont check
you could buy the wrong ticket and its in the small print they can fine you

they wouldnt fine you, Ive been sat in first class before and they've come to check my ticket and just let me stay in there as wasnt too full.

what if it is full?
last time i got a train from sheffield i couldnt even get the seat id reserved let alone any seat
and i booked my tickets saying i had a rail card and the blokey checked i had it when he came around

If its full then would have to stand. Majority of trains are only full at peak times though..have been stood up all the way from Manc to Preston before though

The period during which a ticket is valid is printed on the ticket or set out in the notices and other publications of the relevant Train Companies. If you use a ticket after the expiry of the ticket’s validity, you may be treated as having joined a train without a ticket

12. Restrictions on when you can travel
Restrictions apply to the use of some tickets (including those bought with a Railcard) such as the dates, days, and times when you can use them, and the trains in which they can be used. These restrictions are set out in the notices and other publications of the Train Companies whose trains you are entitled to use. If a restriction applies and the ticket you are using is not valid for the train you are travelling in, then:
(a) you will be liable to pay an excess fare (the difference between the price paid for the ticket you hold and the price of the lowest priced ticket available for immediate travel that would have entitled you to travel in that train for the journey shown on the ticket); or
(b) in the case of some types of discounted tickets (as indicated in the notices and publications) the relevant parts of Condition 4 will apply.
4. Penalty Fares
Penalty Fares are charged by Train Companies at some stations and in some trains. You may be liable to pay a Penalty Fare if:
(a) you travel in a train without a ticket or Permit to Travel; or
(b) you travel in a class of accommodation for which the ticket is not valid; or
(c) you travel in a train and the circumstances set out in Conditions 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 22, 30, 35 and 39 apply; or
(d) you are present in a Compulsory Ticket Area without a ticket or Permit to Travel.
Warning notices are displayed at stations where Penalty Fares are charged. You will not have to pay the full single fare or full return fare under Condition 2 if a Penalty Fare is charged. A Train Company which operates a Penalty Fares scheme will send you a copy of the rules about Penalty Fares and a summary of their scheme if you ask.

Me and my mate did this the other day with two trains, the attendents weren't bothered, they just stamped the ticket and went on their way.
I would imagine it would have been different if it was a busy train though.

Thats what I was thinking, surley it makes no difference to them
Might just get on it and put my watch back forward an hour, claim i'd just come back from Holiday and forgot the re-set it
